It takes about five minutes, and it's objectively the most enjoyable character creator in this category. By the time you reach 'start the conversation,' you already have a mental picture of who you're talking to.

If you'd rather skip the setup, there are more than 140 ready-made companions — split between realistic and anime styles. Both are well developed; it's not an anime section bolted hastily onto a realistic product. You pick your style, the relationship type (girlfriend, companion, friend, or something more specific), a personality archetype from 12 on offer, and you're off.

This foundation is what makes Candy AI work. The visual consistency is real — the same character, the same details, the same rendering across hundreds of generated images. On most platforms, asking for a photo mid-conversation breaks the illusion. Here, it extends it.

Live Action video — 120-second animated clips where your companion moves and reacts — launched in December 2025 and got its major update in February 2026. No equivalent on competing platforms as of June 2026. One thing to know: Live Action shows your companion in motion, not explicit content. The clips show the character's movements, gestures, and reactions — the NSFW side stays in text and images, not video.

Story Mode goes further than a standard roleplay chatbot. It runs on branching narratives with consequence tracking — the choices you make alter future scenes, change how the companion responds, and influence what's generated visually. Betray a character in a fantasy arc and that dynamic carries forward. The templates cover romance, fantasy, mystery, sci-fi, and slice of life, each with persistent worldbuilding across sessions. It was a user suggestion the team shipped. That responsiveness shows in the product.

What frustrates users

The token system. The subscription covers unlimited text chat — but images, voice calls, video features, and NSFW video all consume tokens. A monthly token allowance is included in the paid subscription. Active users burn through them faster than expected, and the cost per action isn't shown clearly before you start spending.

Ready-made NSFW video compilations cost between 100 and 400 tokens per unlock. At token-pack rates, that's a significant spend per clip. Worth knowing before you go after this feature.

Voice quality is the other recurring complaint. Candy AI uses ElevenLabs synthesis but stays behind voice-focused platforms — Kupid AI is clearly better on this. If voice calls are central to what you're after, that gap matters.

The mobile experience has documented freeze issues. The platform is primarily web, and that's where it works best.
